Posted: 08 Mar 2019 04:41 AM PST Yui Mok - PA ImagesGetty Images Meghan Markle has arrived at the International Women's Day panel at King's College London today, her biggest event of month so far. She went for a polished '60s vibe in a black and white patterned dress by Reiss with a black blazer and heels. She had her hair in a bun: Meghan will be joined on the panel with Annie Lennox (The Circle NGO's founder), Adwoa Aboah (Gurls Talk founder), Julia Gillard (Global Institute for Women's Leadership chair), Chrisann Jarrett (Let Us Learn founder), and Angeline Murimirwa (executive director of Camfed). The group will talk about the issues facing women today. Meghan has long made it clear that championing gender equality would be a key part of her royal platform. When she gave the first hint of what her royal work would be focused on at the Royal Foundation Forum with Prince Harry, Kate Middleton, and Prince William last year, Meghan singled out women's empowerment. "I hear a lot of people speaking about girls' empowerment and women's' empowerment," Meghan said then. "You'll often hear people say well, you're helping women find their voices. And I fundamentally disagree with that because women don't need to find their voices, they have a voice. They need to be empowered to use it, and people need to be encouraged to listen. And I think right now in the climate that we're seeing so many campaigns—I mean, #MeToo and TimesUp—there's no better time than [now] to really continue to shine a light on women feeling empowered and people really helping to support them…It [the spotlight] makes such a tremendous difference." |

To commemorate International Women's Day, Meghan Markle participated in a panel organized by the Queen's Commonwealth Trust. The Duchess was joined by musician Annie Lennox, model Adwoa Aboah, former Australian prime minister Julia Gillard, Chrisann Jarrett, and Angeline Murimirwa. For the important occasion, Meghan opted to wear a high-necked, printed dress by REISS, paired with a blazer by Alexander McQueen and black stilettos by Manolo Blahnik. A loose bun, delicate diamond gypset hoop earrings by Jessica McCormack, and a black clutch by Stella McCartney finished off the look. Meghan's clutch and shoes are available to shop here: In her relatively short time as an official member of the royal family, Meghan has made a point to support feminist causes. During her and Prince Harry's tour of Oceania this past fall, she delivered two memorable speeches on the matter. The first, delivered at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji, underscored the importance of women's education. "Everyone should be afforded the opportunity to receive the education they want, but more importantly the education they have the right to receive," Meghan said to the university's students and faculty. "And for women and girls in developing countries, this is vital. Providing them with access to education is the key to economic and social development. Because when girls are given the right tools to succeed, they can create incredible futures, not only for themselves but also for those around them." A few days later, Meghan delivered an address to commemorate the 125th anniversary of women's suffrage in New Zealand. "In looking forward to this very special occasion, I reflected on the importance of this achievement, but also the larger impact of what this symbolizes," Meghan said to the crowd at New Zealand's Government House. "Because yes—women's suffrage is about feminism, but feminism is about fairness." |
