A little while ago I posted about Butterscotch Sunday, a series of special screenings that take place in and around Exeter - specifically their screenings of
Fantastic Mr. Fox and
Mulholland Drive, in which I had a small part to play.
Today I'd like to publicise something a little closer to home - though it does have some connection, since it involves David Lynch. This coming Saturday (7th) marks the next edition of
Filmstock, where the people of Culmstock come together for a fun and informal screening in the village hall. In the past the films they've screened include Hal Ashby's cult classic
Harold and Maude, the latest Bond film
Skyfall, Disney's
The Jungle Book and the Oscar-nominated
Beasts of the Southern Wild. This Saturday, Filmstock hosts a screening of David Lynch's
Wild at Heart, a suitably surreal crime thriller which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1990. Coming just before Lynch's cult TV series
Twin Peaks, the film stars Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern as lovers Sailor and Lula. After Sailor is released from prison for killing a man, the lovers go on the run to California and Lula's possessive mother (Diane Ladd) hires a private detective (Willem Dafoe) to bring them back...
Wild at Heart is a very heady experience - as Lula says, it's "wild at heart and weird on top" - and seeing it on the big screen will be pretty special. Tickets for the Filmstock screening after on sale in the Strand Stores in Culmstock, or are available on the door at £5 each. Doors open at 7pm and the screening is due to start at 8pm. If you want an idea of what to expect, you can read my review of the film

DanielP. S. This is the film that made Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Game' a hit. David Lynch has good taste in music.
