"The FBI Couldn't Find Joe Louis In A Bowl Of Rice"

It was a challenge finding airwave-appropriate sound clips from David Mamet's fascinating 1991 film Homicide to use in my "Hidden Gems" DVD segment this week for CBC Radio — the scenes that weren't full of profanity were riddled with racial slurs. It's a terrific movie and Criterion has done their customary fine job of packaging it; it just wasn't designed for morning radio.

I note, parenthetically, that Criterion has now released two David Mamet films: House of Games and Homicide, leapfrogging over the Joe Mantegna/Don Ameche mafia fable Things Change. There probably aren't as many people clamouring to revisit that one on DVD, but I remember finding it surprisingly charming, and I'd like to see Criterion give it a second chance at finding an audience. (Then again, I also liked Mamet's script for We're No Angels, and everyone thinks that one stinks on ice. I enjoy Mamet when he's in his whimsical-fable mode.)

Anyway, if you want to hear me talk Homicide, here's the link to click.
